The original Yamanbagiri was named due to a legend that the sword was used to cut down a mountain witch (Yamanba). During an exhibition in our world (yes, OUR WORLD), it was revealed that Yamanbagiri Kunihiro was also used to cut down a mountain witch. This supposedly was how he earn his name. As far as canon seems to show, the original Yamanbagiri was the one who cut the witch.
